Wyclef Jean was shot in the hand during a trip to his native Haiti.
According to media reports the former Haitian presidential hopeful was driving through Port-au-Prince at about 11 p.m with fellow rapper Busta Rhymes when the incident happened.
Wyclef who is best known for his stint in the rap group The Fugees, was visiting Haiti to support presidential candidate Michel Martelly in an election campaign.
It is believed the car he was driving in was sprayed with bullets.
A spokesman for Wyclef Jean says the hip-hop star has been released from a hospital after being treated for a gunshot wound to his hand.
His representatives wrote on Twitter: “We have spoken to Wyclef, he is ok.
“Thank you for your thoughts and prayers – Management.”
No other passengers are thought to have been hurt.
Last year, Jean was himself a presidential hopeful, but was ruled ineligible to run for office after failing to have been a resident in Haiti for five years.
