Cuba and CARICOM on Thursday celebrated the 44th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between four independent States of CARICOM and Cuba and the fourteenth anniversary of Cuba-CARICOM Day.

On November 29, during the mass rally to pay tribute to Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution, HE Roosevelt Skerrit, the prime minister of Dominica and president pro tempore of CARICOM, said “the community of the Caribbean recalls with pride that it were four of our member States, the ones that came together in 1972 to break the diplomatic isolation Cuba was suffering in the hemisphere”.

The four states that decided to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba are Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Guyana. Cuba also received “permanent and unwavering support” from all CARICOM member States in the fight against the United States policy of blockade.

As the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, stated at the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of that ground-breaking event: “Probably, the leaders of these countries, also considered the founding fathers of the independence of their nations and of Caribbean integration — Errol Barrow from Barbados, Forbes Burnham from Guyana, Michael Manley from Jamaica and Eric Williams from Trinidad and Tobago — realised that their decision to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba was paving the way for the future foreign policy of the Caribbean Community, which to this day stands on three major pillars: independence, courage and concerted action.”

Cuba and CARICOM has been able to build a special relation based on cooperation, solidarity and mutual respect. The Caribbean has maintained within its foreign policy principles, the defence of the regional integration.

Cuba continues to feel proud of the excellent relations it maintains with every country of the Caribbean and it shall continue working side by side with CARICOM member States toward the strengthening of the diplomatic and economic relations, said a press release.

Likewise, it reiterates the willingness to continue and strengthen cooperation with CARICOM in areas like health, education, sports, among other things.
