The photographer behind Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday cover is explaining the Barbie themed concept.

Artist GL Wood, who also shot the rapper for Out Magazine, says it was Minaj’s idea to pose like a doll with missing limbs.

He tells VIBE,

“[Nicki] wanted to rip her arms off to really do the whole Barbie theme, like when little girls trash their dolls. She wanted to look like one of those broken Barbies.”

He also says he had a slightly different idea for the project and wanted to make it seem like he’d slashed pieces of Minaj taped them back together.

“I had an idea to cut up pieces of her and paste it back together. It still would kind of look like her, but it would be sliced apart and taped a little off centered.”

He also tells VIBE that she could very well have one of the best album covers of the year.

“There’s people who are going to get it and not get it, but that’s the point. There’s few if any female artists now who are pushing the envelope. And that’s far from a bad thing.”
