The launch of the 8th season of Digicel Rising stars took place last evening on TVJ with more than what can be said to be shocking announcements to the fans of the nation’s top talent competition. In a press release from the show it stated
“We made a few changes last year to test the waters, and now we’ve decided to go bold and completely transform the series. We believe that the changes will bring a new energy to the show, taking the same show Jamaican fell in love with seven years ago and giving it a 2011 makeover.” Explained the show’s Producer, Sharon Schroeter.”
Some of these changes would include the replacing of the host Lady Rennae with Miss Jamaica World 2010 Terri-Karelle Reid as well as the new cast of judges, radio disk jock Bambino and recording artiste Tessanne Chin where they will be joined by a guest judge each week making it three judges per show. The changes did not stop there as news came to the change in format. This year, the Live Show finalists will be cut down to 12 (from last year’s 16) and will be chosen only by the Judges and producers from the five auditions. In this way the producers can guarantee that quality will make the live stage rather than popularity.
In a statement, Shelly-Ann Curran, Digicel’s Senior Sponsorship Manager promises that the new changes won’t detract from the main purpose of the show: “We are very proud of the journey of Digicel Rising Stars over the years and patrons and contestants alike are guaranteed a bigger, better 8th season for 2011. Digicel remains committed to continue to unearth talent and showcase them on a platform fit to take them to the next level – and that is exactly what the Digicel Rising Stars show provides.
With the new changes several fans of the show have expressed their views on the shows social media fan page as they seek answers as to why Lady Rennae was removed and where they had “Shipped Antony Miller off to”. Several fans of the show have threatened not to watch season 8 of Digicel Rising Stars as they request the return of the format season 7 had introduced with Lady Rennae as the host. The new season with its new changes has continued to attract the needed sponsorship from Digicel, KFC, TVJ, Pepsi, The Star, Knutsford Court Hotel, and Courtleigh Auditorium with auditions set to take place in 5 locations across the Island for only 1 day. The start of season 8 is ready for Saturday May 21 in May Pen.
