Great mixes, good vibe and music was how one could describe the atmosphere at last Saturday’s Wray and Nephew Bar Code party.

The ultra drink inclusive event dubbed, ‘The Rules of Rum’ was staged at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston, and was rather well attended.

When THE STAR arrived minutes after midnight, the fairly packed venue had patrons rocking to songs like So Special,Money Fi Spend and Tease Her with Code Red on the turntables.

Where liquor was concerned, patrons had everything to their leisure, as several white tents were set up around the venue housing different bars. Some served mixed-liquor, while others served beers and other drinks.

At about 1:15 a.m. Coppershot took over on the turntables opening up with Sojah Boy’s Crank Dat before moving into Party Like A Rockstar, This Is Why I’m Hot, Fallen Soldier and a string of Mavado hits.

By 1:30 a.m. it was time for the females to feel the action as they got down and ‘dirrrtty’ on the dance floor. During this time several patrons were seen winning and gyrating against each other to songs like Wine Pon It, Force It Up, Wine Gal and Pon Di Edge.

Richie Ras then took over changing the pace with Winner, Pain, Book of Life,Love Inna Mi Heart and Chiney K. Even at this point patrons were still seen entering the venue.

By the time Code Red took over once again, the momentum rose for the rest of the night with songs like Nah Nah Nah, Tek Weh Yuself, Drunken Dance and Raging Bull.

By 3 a.m., the party had come to an end after the selector indicated over the microphone that it was now time to go home and thanked patrons for coming out. It was during this time that THE STAR left the venue and so too did patrons.

Popular dancehall artiste Moses 'Beenie Man' Davis will have to wait a while longer to find out the outcome of his tax evasion trial

Popular dancehall artiste Moses ‘Beenie Man’ Davis will have to wait a while longer to find out the outcome of his tax evasion trial as it was put off again, yesterday.

Three witnesses testified in the case yesterday. Two of whom were from the Inland Revenue Dept., while the third was the person who served the summons.

However, no major breakthroughs have yet been made in the case and only basic procedures to bring the matter to trial were addressed.

Resident Magistrate Owen Parkins, therefore, ordered that Beenie Man return to the Tax Court in Kingston on July 29 when the matter will again be heard.

Failed to pay

Beenie Man is said to owe the state close to $48 million in taxes for the period between the late 1990s and early 2000, during which time the entertainer was signed with Shocking Vibes and Patrick Roberts, his former manager.

The tax authorities allege that Davis failed to pay over $29,290,116 in back taxes and $18,641,254 in penalties, both figures reaching a total of $47,931,370 during this period.

Although Beenie Man could not be reached for a comment up to press time, the artiste who had been interviewed by THE STAR previously about his tax woes had said, “Dem (Government) sey mi owe dem from bout 1997- 2002 an dah time deh mi deh a Shocking Vibes an Patrick Roberts is di man weh response fi everything. Him collect all a mi money - suh personal tax an dem ting deh him suppose fi deal wid. Suh when me leave Shocking Vibes, mi leave wid mi two long hand dem an mi talent, a just my personal money and resources mi leave wid. Suh every contract, show, tour mi do Shocking Vibes use to deal wid dem,” Beenie Man said.

The energy at the beginning was low but the momentum eventually increased at the day-long ‘Rum Punch’ event, held at the New Kingston Golf Academy on Sunday.

The theme ’strings and blings’ was adhered to, for the most part, as many women were dressed in revealing swimsuits, shorts and dresses, while the men simply ‘blinged’.

Artistes like Elephant Man, Bounty Killer, Mavado, Bling Dawg, Munga, Leftside, Tifa, Timberlee, Natalie and DASECA’s Loraine were among those spotted at the venue.

The Renaissance Disco was at the turntables, providing music throughout the day, and although there were not many patrons in the venue at 6 p.m., the selectors played some old-time favourites like TLC’s No Scrubs and DMX’s Ruff Rider’s Anthem. By 7 p.m. the selectors had people rocking to Monster Shack Crew’s Own Man and Scare Dem Crew’s Nuh Fight Ova Gal.

Old hip-hop

When Coppershot started their set they immediately had patrons dancing the Log On and Online. At this point Cutty of Coppershot mocked Elephant Man, saying he was no longer fit enough to dance to his own songs. In no time, Sizzla was telling the people how to Slew Dem wid Karate, while Sean Paul told patrons how to Get Busy.

As ZJ Electra started her set, she had some difficulties with the equipment. She began with some old hip-hop and rap songs that the crowd barely responded to.

However, as she progressed, she showed that she was just as good as her male counterparts. She thrilled the crowd with Alliance Anthem on a hip-hop beat before she played Riding Dirty. She had the patrons dancing up a storm to Nuh Linga and Gully Creepa. Songs like Serani’s Study People, Bugle’s Cyaan Look Inna Mi Eye and Mavado’s Gully Side resonated well with the audience.

People sang along to Mavado’s Faster Than a Bullet and Overcome. She also mixed Usher’s In Da Club with Vybz Kartel’s Tic Toc and Munga’s Wine Pon It before playing Calabria by Enur and Natasja. By now people were going down by the water slide, fully clothed and the all-inclusive bar was now inaccessible due to the magnitude of people.

ZJ Liquid was next on the turntable telling the people about My Scheme and Mission to Mek De Paper, especially the Trailer Load of Money. As he imagined being Stinkin Rich he said he was annoyed that the men were getting more videolight than the women.

Two-minute problem

He then switched the attention to the women with Busy Signal telling them how to Do Dat. In no time the women were ‘jiggling their bodies’, ‘backing up’ and showing that they ‘know how to wine’, while Liquid still ‘teased them’. After a two-minute problem with the equipment the people were popping to Chi Ching Ching and Bling Dawg’s Popcorn. Then he made the women Cool It Down for Busy Signal.

Renaissance returned for their second set and was obviously hell-bent on making the women dance. This certainly achieved their mission with Uku, Goodas Fi Dem, Beaten Beaten, Bubble Like Soup and Girls Territory.

Coppershot also returned with high energy playing Pamputae’s Good Good, to which the women got wild and patted themselves. As the energy increased the rain started, forcing some people to seek shelter while some simply left.

Those who stayed, ‘daggered’ to Charlie Blacks asking ‘ladies can you wine?’. Busy Signal’s request to Wine Pon De Edge was obeyed and that was also the case when Vybz Kartel told the women to ‘touch him’.

These women were not shy as they flaunted their outfits and curves at ‘Rum Punch Strings’ and Blings party.

The look in their eyes suggest that they spotted something that they liked at ‘Rum Punch Stings and Blings’ party, held at C & W Golf Acamedy, New Kingston on Sunday June 29.

They tried their best to shift the attention elsewhere when they attended ‘Rum Punch Stings and Blings’ party.

Dancehall’s ace female deejay, Marion ‘Lady Saw’ Hall, recently apologised to her local fans for her absence this year from the premier reggae festival, Sumfest. Saw will be taking the summer to explore Europe, where she will be on a month-long promotional tour.

“We will be hitting the ground running,” she said. “It will be three and a half weeks of promotion for a project I am working on, and I am really looking forward to it,” she said.
Saw left the island yesterday and will have a short breather before her first show kicks off on July 3 in Denmark. Her hectic first week schedule includes performances at some major reggae concerts including the Roskilde Festival in Kolnon, Germany, on July 4; July 5 will see her in France at the Eurockennes Festival, then July 6 in Amsterdam, Holland at Two Sevens Splash. Come July 8, she will be in Frankfurt, then the tour moves to Zurich, Switzerland for another event, Moods and then on to Italy for the Rototom Festival, which will have a Dancehall Night for the first time in its history.

Saw will also perform in Spain, where she did a show earlier this year, return to France for Toulouse Salle le Ramier, move on to Solvakia for the Trencin Pohoda Festival with a return to Switzerland, on July 19, after which she moves on to Belgium on July 20 for the Dour Festival.

The deejay, who is noted for representing well on her overseas engagements, is busy working on an album which will be her first since her release from her VP Records contract.

“The contract with VP expired and we decided not to resign. We are currently working on various projects and this new album is one of them. It is fresh and exciting and all the top producers will be making an appearance. I will also be doing some of the production myself,” she mentioned.

Lady Saw recently appeared on one of Hype TV’s most popular programmes, Up & Live, where she had a premier of her new video Belvedere Heights. She lauded the work put into the video by director Wayne Wade, who also did the video for another of her singles, Chat To Mi Back.

Saw also holds a space on the Hype TV Top 20 singles chart, with the provocative single Sunday To Sunday on the Big Ship label, which sits at the #14 position after five weeks on chart.

With all the parties going on in Kingston last weekend, ‘Stush: The Paparazzi Edition’ got lost among the bigger patron drawing events.

Held at the Pantry, New Kingston last Saturday night, when THE STAR arrived at the venue minutes to midnight there was only a handful of patrons rocking to the music. As the night progressed patrons trickled in but the venue was nowhere near to being full by 2 a.m. when THE STAR left. DJs Christoff and Dre, from Renaissance Disco, played for the majority of the night finally giving over the turntables to DJ Sanjay from Coppershot at 2 a.m. At midnight Christoff and Dre held an oldies vibe with Beenie Man preaching about having ’nuff gal’, Nadine Sutherland sang about Action and Sean Paul ‘infiltrated’ the party.

Red carpet

The venue was decked out to synchronise with the name of the party with ladies in classic black dresses acting as ushers, a red carpet leading to the dance floor and two ice swan sculptures complementing the décor. One couple in white caught the attention of the cameramen present, looking stush the male sported a white jacket with a lot of bling that caught the lights well. The women that were present were decked out in classy dresses and fashionable shorts and tops.

By 1 a.m. patrons finally began dancing as the oldies vibe prevailed with rap music from Eve. The patrons gathered near the selectors as they made the best of the music. Sanjay brought the party up to date with new dancehall songs as he brought a little energy. Songs such as Back It Up and Hot Wuk made an impression mixed in with Coca Cola Bottle Shape. When the STAR left the venue after 2 a.m., others were also leaving.

It is now official. Partying and vibes are akin to Twisted Spiritz. The all-inclusive event, staged retro style on the Palisadoes Go-Kart Strip on Saturday, was a blast.

The venue was set up in a trendy fashion with a central bar catering to the patrons’ selective drinking habits. Other bars, which also served up an abundance of alcohol, littered the venue. The lighting was first class, barring a set in the parking area that shone ‘blinding’ lights at approaching patrons.

Foundation

When THE STAR team arrived at the venue at minutes to midnight, there was only a handful of patrons on the inside. The Renaissance selectors were building the foundation for the party and the Tropical Rhythm girls kept the ‘early birds’ refreshed.

The selectors, for the most part, acknowledged the night’s theme ‘Go Retro’; however, there were times when they ’stepped out of the box’ and still managed to please the audience.

Prolific

DJ Rush of Code Red was the most prolific of the selectors. He skilfully mixed retro music from different genres and the crowd loved him for it. The women moved liberally to the Thong Song before coordinating on the Macarena. Kirk Franklin’s Stomp fuelled the vibes and not even Vanilla Ice’s Ice Baby could cool the tempo. The patrons roared when DJ Rush brought the party to Another Level with Bounty Killer and Baby Cham; however, it was Buju Banton’s Boom Bye Bye that caused pandemonium.

Nemesis took over the turntables and immediately demonstrated their intention. They started out a strong set with a few selections from Bob Marley which the crowd sang along to. They then changed gear, twisting the mind of the patrons with Sizzla’s Nah Apologise, and Shabba’s Love Punnany Bad before delving into Mavado’s I’m So Special. The energy inside of the venue at this time was reaching boiling point, as the patrons continued to ‘roll in’ in their numbers despite the fact that it was after 2 a.m.

Musical spirit

The selectors from Bloodline also left their mark on the party with several selections from Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Mavado and Vybz Kartel. Their set drifted far from the retro theme, but from the reaction of the patrons, one could tell that they did not mind at all.

The musical spirit and the alcoholic spirits continued to flow freely even when THE STAR team left the venue at 3:45 a.m. Renaissance had just started their second stint and the patrons were going wild. As the news team left, there were still persons looking to get in.

Reggae star Tarrus Riley, one of this year's headline acts, served notice that he will be a hard act to follow when he delivered a well received three-song cameo

Reggae star Tarrus Riley, one of this year’s headline acts, served notice that he will be a hard act to follow when he delivered a well received three-song cameo at Tuesday night’s Reggae Sumfest reception at the Pier One Complex, in Montego Bay.

The reception was designed to update the media, sponsors and well-wishers on the promoter’s state of readiness for the annual festival, which will unfold between July 13 and 19 at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre, in Montego Bay.

After a detailed update on the state of readiness for this year’s event by businessman Johnny Gourzong, the executive director of Summerfest Production Limited, Tarrus Riley set off a dancing frenzy. He initially reeled off Far Away and Lion Paw and then returned to answer a request for She’s Royal.

“You have to come to Sumfest if you want more,” Riley said, as additional requests came from the appreciative gathering. “You are going to get everything at Sumfest.”

In giving his update on the promoter’s state of readiness, Gourzong announced that Robert Russell, the festival’s chairman, was in the United States finalising arrangements with an unnamed major international act. He also announced the signing of exciting American rapper Lil’ Wayne for the festival.

“I think we will have a great line-up this year because we have pulled out all the stops in ensuring that we have signed all the major acts that are available,” said Gourzong.

In outlining that Reggae Sumfest was the recipient of more major international awards this year, Gourzong heaped praises on the sponsors and patrons for their part in making the festival, which was first staged in 1993, the major success it has been.

After endorsements from sponsors such as Digicel, the Jamaica Tourist Board and Air Jamaica and excellent short performances by Montego Bay artistes, Mickey Ranks and Ras Select, the promoters announced that the festival will not be impacted by the Noise Abatement Act.

“The show will not be affected by any enforcement of the Noise Abatement Act as the promoters have got the required permission to go beyond 2:00 a.m.,” Jackie Norman, the master of ceremonies, told the gathering. “The show will go on until daybreak or until all the artistes have performed.”

This year’s star-studded line-up includes Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riley, Beenie Man, Bounty Killa, Mavado, Anthony B, Voice Mail, Macka Diamond, Spice, Demarco, Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Queen Ifrika, Richie Spice, Jah Cure and Etana.

finest parties move to Negril for Appleton Temptation Island (ATI) this summer.

ATI held its official launch on Saturday at Morgan’s Harbour. The party weekend plans to explode in Negril from Thursday, July 31 to Sunday, August 3. When the STAR contacted ATI co-ordinator and promoter, Dwayne Julius, he claimed that ATI will be packed with excitement this year.

Appleton Temptation Island features nine parties, including: Rhythm and Booze, Extreme Wet N Wild, Twisted Spiritz, Yush, Spiritz, MIA, Chill and Wet Waves. This year for the first time there will be Appleton Jouvert, bringing a little carnival vibe to Negril. All of ATI’s events will be taking place at either the Khool Runnings Water Park, Waves or Risky Business.

According to Julius, last year, ATI saw approximately 5,000 patrons and each year the weekend event gets bigger and better.

“ATI weekend gets larger every year, sometimes we think it can’t get bigger and it does, last year was bigger than the year before and this year we’re expecting larger numbers,” Julius said.

This year, according to Julius, ATI is stepping up the game so that patrons will get more for their money. This year, the whole ATI weekend is a super-inclusive one with all nine parties being drink and food-inclusive.

Julius told the STAR that this gives ATI a leg-up on their competition, the RTI Weekend, which occurs at the same time in Negril.

“We have the best line-up with Kingston’s finest parties moving to Negril. Extreme Wet N Wild is the most-anticipated party held in Negril at the Khool Runnings Water Park. With five different slides and go-karting, last year it was the best party. There’s Rhythm and Booze, which is the most popular party in terms of the all-inclusives. Appleton Jouvert, everyone loves a good jouvert, Yush is also well established so we cover all bases,” Julius commented.

The season bands for ATI ($8,500) will be made available by this weekend at various locations.
