Now that her single, ‘Love You Pure’, has gained some traction locally, 10 months after it’s release, reggae singer Sophia Brown believes that after her album drops, some time later this year, she will be well on her way to becoming a household name in Jamaica.

Still, Brown, who has an old-school sound and old-school principles, says she is not willing to sacrifice her standards by delving into raunchy songs to achieve that success.

“It will be soulful reggae that my European fans, my Australian fans, all my fans love,” she says of the album she intends to release by October. “It will have some big sounds but, I am not going to give in to peer pressure, because people will say that I don’t know what I am about.”

No raunchy stuff

She says steering away from the raunchy stuff is one of the biggest challenges she faces while trying to break into the Jamaican music scene.

“If you have kids, you don’t want to do certain things, especially if you want to be a role model for children,” says Brown, the mother of two teenagers. “If I am not raunchy, you should still appreciate me, because I am bringing quality work, quality music.”

Brown, a 15-year veteran, has a new single on the market called I’m a Rose. She also has distribution deals with online distributors Rhapsody.com and Apple iTunes, through which she has managed to generate a lot of interest in her singles. In fact, Love You Pure was recently one of the most downloaded songs on iTunes.

In the meantime, she is keeping busy trying to get recognisition for her work. She also has an upcoming tour to Dubai with Chaka Demus and Pliers and Steel Pulse, and has a local performance on Independence Day in Clarendon.

Name game

Brown has not yet come up with a name for the album because, she says, she is waiting to be inspired. She has mulled over using I’m a Rose, the title of her latest single or Sophia Brown: Simple Old Me, the title of yet another of her songs.

Whatever name she comes up with, however, she believes the album is just what she needs to propel her into the spotlight. She hopes that by next year this time, Sophia Brown will be the name to reckon. “The work I will do on this album, is going to take me to where I want to be,” she said.
